MONTIETH MCCOLLUM (US)
Hidden Frequencies

“Hidden Frequencies” is a performative multi-media work. Part one comprises the film “Listen” focusing on the more esoteric
nuances of short wave radio from abstract frequencies and sounds to fragments of personal narratives. The film includes a voice over by Swedish sound artist Invar Loco Nordin discussing his attraction towards the illusive qualities of shortwave as a
musical form. The second phase of this work is a live musical performance on strings, telegraph, Instructograph, turntables,
and an Animoog iphone app performed by Monteith McCollum.

The work is composed and structured according to morse code phrasings and rhythms using the violin and telegraph. The
rhythms in the performance are composed to sound out the phrase “Mary Wore Jane’s So-Called Hat” This phase is an exercise from a 1940’s instructional vinyl record on how to learn code. This record is also sampled and played during the
performance. The telegraph oscillator is manipulated as a sonic bridge between the sounds in the film and the musical
performance itself. This part of the work focuses primarily on the rhythmic aspects of various forms of communication.
The performance ends with a live cutting on a record lathe, several playback needles are utilized to re-play the cuts functioning as a primitive analog looper.
