Gram[m]ofon: Tamas Ungvary

Gram[m]ofon = talk + podcast + concert

A record player, or a Gram[m]ofon, is more than just a device that plays back music.
Combine it with a record collection and you have a machine that plays back a person’s history.

Meet the composer Tamas Ungvary in a personal conversation with Mats Almegård and get to know Tamas through the music that made the greatest impression on him through his life.
Hungrian-Swedish Tamas Ungvary has been described as the Franz Liszt of the electronic music with his compositions, often grandiose orchestral, brutal and willful yet elegant.

Mats Almegård has been writing about electronic and experimental music for more
than a decade in swedish and international media. Mats is the producer and reporter
of the show Elektroniskt i P2 med Andreas Tilliander – the show on electronic music
on Swedish National Radio.
Presented in collaboration with The Polish Institute

Portrait concert Tamas Ungvary

He was a double bass player in the Hungarian Philharmonic before he studied conducting.
In the 60’s he came to Sweden and began composing electronic music at the Electronic Music Studio in Stockholm where he for many years also worked as a teacher of composition and director of development of different software for EMS computers. In the 90’s, Tamas worked as a professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna and conducted research at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Skuggornas Viskningar (2016)

Premiere of new electronic piece, commissioned by Swedish Radio
Hungarian title: Árnyak suttogásai

Motto by Sándor Weöres : Mackó brummog

Mackó brummog:
– Irgum-burgum,
bundám rongyos,
ez abszurdum!

The work is a sound kaleidoscope composed by fragments and reflects my perception and experience of the present, past and a possible future.
Thinking about Samuel Becket's " Waiting for Godot " that I have a lifelong relationship to.
Becket’s absurdity have captured and inspired me. Godot challenge to be doubting/affirmingly curious about everything. : music, function, tradition, sound, literature, art, the senses, emotions, talents, ideas, visions, ideologies, religions, science, symbols, order and chaos

Godot is, was and will
always be !

Sinus-Coitus för piano och tape (1978)

Mats Persson performs the extremly dense and massive piece.

During the preparation and listening to a few hundred sine functions, I discovered that the frequency is pulsing rhythmically at determined constellations although the amplitudes were constant. The work is composed on the basis of these constellations.
Even if the "technical" is the starting point, it is a very emotional piece. Hence the title: Sinus Coitus. It recalls the original and the coveted retrieval of the unit between thought and feeling.

Since 1972, Mats Persson conducted an extensive concert activity, both as a member of ensembles and as a soloist and in piano duo with Kristine Scholz.
Presented in collaboration with EMS and the Swedish Radio

Christine Abdelnour

Born in 1978, Christine lives in France but is of Lebanese origin. After discovering
improvised music in 1997 she began a process of self-taught study and sound
experimentation using the alto saxophone.
She has developed a unique personal language, producing sounds that are close to those of electroacoustic music but on a purely acoustic instrument.

She approaches sound as a malleable material, rich in concrete textures which combine breath, silence and countless acoustic distortions. She has developed extended techniques and complex patterns of sound production, exploring the microtonal aspects of the saxophone and its high-pitched tones. She employs subtle tonguing techniques, unpitched breaths, spittle-flecked growls, biting, slicing notes and breathy echoing sounds from the
bell of her horn. Far from any narrative effects, her music addresses the relation between listening and concepts of perception, time and space.

FRIM is very pleased to announce saxophonist Christine Abdelnour during the Sound of Stockholm 2016. Christine, with her unique sound and musical language has for long been one of the international improvised music scene's most exciting and personal voices,
both as a soloist and ensemble musician. She has released a dozen records and toured
around the world but this is the first time she gives a solo concert in Stockholm, an event we really look forward to !
Presented by FRIM

Félicia Atkinson

Félicia Atkinson is a French artist and an avant musician who has been composing music
under her own name and the moniker Je Suis Le Petit Chevalier since 2004.

She has released records and tapes on different labels such as Shelter Press, NNA, Umor Rex, Home Normal, Aguirre, Spekk, Peak Oil. Félicia is also the co-pilot of the label and publishing house Shelter Press.

Sote is an electronic music composer and sound artist based in Tehran, Iran.

In the past 20 plus years his music has been released on labels such as Warp, Sub Rosa, Opal Tapes, Morphine, Digitalis, and Repitch among others.

Sote is striving to create “the other sound”, music without a specific culture.
His work deals with continuing analysis and execution of music with a maximalist musical aesthetic. Polyrhythmic structures, interwoven patterns and complex ornaments.
Presented in collaboration with EMS

Please note that the following artists won't play at Fylkingen, but at Under Bron, where Sound of Stockholm continues all night long!

SØS Gunver Ryberg

Fylkingen proudly presents an artist who has found a unique place operating inbetween several different layers of the electronic music sphere with a voice truly of her own. SØS Gunver Ryberg returns to Stockholm to deliver her renown ruinous techno with fierce and memorable precision.

SØS Gunver Ryberg is a modern composer and sound artist hailing from Denmark. Approaching rhythm and texture from new angles her work fuses synthesis, processed field recordings and symphonic ambience with full force industrial beats and techno to form a raw slab of exquisite brutality.

Her live performances are at the same time an intense, drum heavy, assault on the senses and a hypnotic release from the shackles of the physical world, engulfing the listener in wave after wave of pulverising sonic bursts. This might be music made for dancing, but in it’s core more reminiscent of a transcendent ritual than a club night.

In the beginning of 2016, SØS released her debut EP ‘AFTRYK’ on Samuel Kerridge’s Berlin based Contort imprint.
Presented by Fylkingen

Paula Temple

With an uncompromising take on dance music, Paula Temple has carved herself a distinct position at the cutting edge of modern techno. With a penchant for abrasive sounds, her music delivers a forceful message of firm conviction.

After being picked up by respectable R&S Records, her powerful productions has been remixed by notable avant-garde musicians such as The Knife, Perera Elsewhere and Planningtorock.

Keeping with her sense of disruption of the norm, Paula founded Noise Manifesto - a record label working with questions of equality and featuring at least 50% female and queer artists.

Over the last few years Sigha is a name that has become synonymous with forward thinking techno and electronic music. His interest in immersive sound design and experimentation combined with a staunchly British take on the genre have helped him carve a unique path through a densely populated field.
Releases on James Ruskin's Blueprint label and his own Our Circula Sound imprint have received huge support from across the scene. His debut album 'Living With Ghosts' dropped on Hotflush Recordings in December 2013 to
critical acclaim and a slew of hugely successful tour dates. Not content with simply repeating this, Sigha spent the next year in Berlin expanding his hardware set up and experimenting with modular synthesis. Post Living With Ghosts finds Sigha more assured than ever, eps on His own OCS label (A Series of Desecrations), and Shifted's AVN imprint (The Purification
Loops), as well as the pairs collaborative A Model Authority project give a glimpse into the artists direction over the next year.
