Unstumm är ett interdisciplinärt och interkulturellt samarbetsprojekt för improviserad film och musik (Echtzeitfilm) mellan filmskapare, videokonstnärer, visuella konstnärer och musiker från Tyskland och andra länder. Projektet utvecklades av gitarristen/ljudkonstnären Nicola L. Hein samt datormusikern/improvisatören/ljuddesignern Korhan Erel och är nu organiserat och kurerat av videokonstnären Claudia Schmitz och Nicola L. Hein.
Målet är att skapa en miljö av kulturella och kreativa utbyten där ett gemensamt, komplext, transmedialt konstnärligt språk skapas och används för att förmedla och utforska händelseförlopp, texturer, kollisioner, kombinationer och attraktioner mellan det visuella och audiella.
Unstumm Sverige har fört samman fyra svenska visuella konstnärer/musiker, tillsammans med fyra tyska musiker/visuella konstnärer för en veckas residens på Gerlesborgsskolan i Bohuslän. Konstnärerna har jobbat tillsammans i två olika grupper för att skapa en audiovisuell föreställning som utforskar multidisciplinär improvisation samt strukturer och händelseförlopp.
Resultatet av processen kommer framföras som två ”echtzeit-filmer” (realtidsfilmer), som är improviserade av varje grupp utifrån en konceptuell komposition som har utarbetats tillsammans under repetitionerna. Varje grupp presenterar att stycke som är 40-50 min långt. Det resulterande konstverket reflekterar över interkulturalitet, kulturella identiteter, kommunikation över kulturella gränser, historiska konstnärliga tankesätt i olika kulturer samt många andra filosofiska ämnen.
Själva konsertlokalen är också en viktig detalj som bidrar till det konstnärliga slutresultatet. För att maximera den konstnärliga kreativa processen kommer den att ställas iordning utifrån rummets potential så att framförandet utnyttjar de bästa akustiska, visuella & sceniska möjligheterna. Väggar, objekt som placeras ut eller hängs upp i rummet & olika skärmar kommer att skapa olika ytor & vinklar för visuella projektioner. Hela rummet omvandlas till en konstinstallation.
Unstumm har redan genomförts i Köln 2015, Hong Kong och Singapore 2016, Tokyo och Seoul 2017 och under 2019 i Colombia samt Argentina. Unstumm vill etablera långvariga relationer runt om i världen. Projektet jobbar bortom gränser som står mellan konstformer, kulturer och identiteter och dess mål är kommunikation genom improvisation med högsta möjliga konstnärliga integritet.
UNSTUMM sverige görs i samarbete med Musikverket, Kulturrådet, Goethe Institut, Gerlesborgsskolan och framförs även på Atalante i Göteborg.

UnStumm - Conversation of moving image and sound is a collaborative intermediate project that brings together four video artists and musicians from two countries. The aim is to create an environment of cultural and creative exchange in which a common, complex, transmedial artistic language is invented and used to convey narratives, textures, collisions, combinations and attractions of the visual and the sonic. The space of the performances will be addressed in its potential as a sounding body. The group will present two real-time movies (Echtzeitfilme) on the evening of the performance, composed in the moment of its display.

NICOLA L. HEIN
Nicola L. Hein (*1988) guitarist, composer, philosopher and sound artist.
Studies: Jazz Music (B. A.), Philosophy / German Studies (B. A.), Sound Art Composition (M. A.). Currently Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, New York.
Work as a musician mainly in the area of improvised / contemporary music and jazz.
The starting point of the sonic language is the extension of the current playing techniques of the instrument by a wide range of idiosyncratic sounds and techniques.
He also works as a sound artist and composer both in the fields of installation and performance, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaborations, the creation of (performatively usable) sound sculptures and the aesthetic reflection and processing of different philosophical theories.
Theoretical works in the field of music philosophy and aesthetics.

CLAUDIA SCHMITZ
"My work begins where the media meets."
Claudia Schmitz explores boundaries: Limits of perception, real and imagined barriers, liquid processes, body discourses.
She deals with synaesthesia, identity in real and virtual spaces, interactivity and reactivity, intermediality (time-based media coupled with the phenomenology of drawing and drawing), socio-urban structures and questions of hegemonic perception and sustainability.
Claudia Schmitz uses pneumatic sculpture, multidimensional drawing, moving images and food to make new forms of space and experience accessible. In capturing temporary states, rejecting and reinventing themselves, her work addresses oscillation on the level of being in and out of the picture, exploring the radius of media arrangements and the possibility of participation.
After several semesters of film studies, art history and mathematics in Mainz and Cologne, Claudia Schmitz studied at the KHM Cologne. She received her diploma in media art with distinction from VALIE EXPORT, Peter Zimmermann, Prof. Dr. Marie-Luise Angerer and Susanna Schoenberg.
She composed film music and has been working as VJ (Live-Visual Jockey) under the name COCO HÖHN since 2005, which influences her engagement with video and space.

AXEL DÖRNER
Axel Dörner was born in 1964 in Köln, Germany and is one of the most unique voices in free improvisation. He developed a completely different language for the trumpet in the late 1990s. Most of the ensembles he is part of are characterized by a non-hierarchical collaboration of the musicians involved. Before he recorded his first officially released solo CD named Trumpet (A Bruit Secret, 2001), he made a number of trumpet solo releases in the late 1990s, only published as CD–Rs with self-made covers. Since 2000 extended concert tours on all five continents which led to a worldwide genre- comprehensive musical network with most distinguished musicians of our time. His discography consists at this time of more than 150 CDs / LPs. Since 2000 he is working on an electronic extension of his music on the trumpet (together with Sukandar Kartadinata). LILLIVAN
Lillevan is an animation, video and media artist.
He is perhaps best known as founding member of the visual / music group Rechenzentrum (1997-2008).
Lillevan has performed and collaborated with many artists from a wide array of genres, from opera to installation, from minimal electronic experimentalism to dance and classical music; performed and exhibited all over the globe, and at all the major media festivals.
Since the mid-nineties he has mainly investigated non-narrative facets of film, this has lead to completely abstract works, but also to collage explorations of film history, to interactive works for dance groups and much more. The focus is often on the musicality of the imagery, thus defining the moving imagery as an instrument in its own right as opposed to accompanying music. Intensity and texture are more important than narrative and figure, the relationships between the image’s elements and the viewing eye, between the eye, the mind and the soul are explored, the world of media archaeology is of major interest, while questioning viewing habits and manipulative image-creation.
Lillevan recontextualizes, combines and politicizes existing film images and fragments. ‘The aesthetics of the image are not to be found in its beauty, density and completeness, but in its transparencies and potentials.’ The images are a communicative medium interacting with the music. The selection of the images can either support the sound, or work against it, the aim being to achieve a dialogue. Interference and broken imagery is a central dramaturgical element in the creation and performance. Some film doesn’t need a soundtrack, the images produce the music, and propel the viewer into a psycho-visual-composition.
CASEY MOIR
Casey Moir är en improvisatör och kompositör bosatt i Stockholm som utforskar ’extended technique’ inom röst. Hennes djupa nyfikenhet i röstens ljudmöjligheter och texturella egenskaper, blandas med den subtila användningen av utvalda pedaler och objekt. Musiken blir lager av den akustiska rösten, förlängda i soundscapes, som vävs samma i ett intrikat nät av sound.
Casey har turnerat runtom i Europa och även i USA, Mexiko, Taiwan och Australien. Utöver hennes arbete med andra musiker runtom i världen, samarbetar hon ofta i interdisciplinära projekt, och jobbar mot ett kollektivt konstspråk mellan dansare, bildkonstnärer samt live visual artists.
LISSKULLA MOLTKE-HOFF
Lisskulla Moltke-Hoff är konstnär och filmare: film i fysisk form.
Nästan all hennes konstnärliga verksamhet bygger på film och video.
Det gäller också nära samarbeten med musiker och dansare, performance, rumslig gestaltning och installation, med fokus på abstraktion, lager, ljus, ljud och rörelse.
Men också fotografi och objekt: Video skulptur, videomåleri, stora prints utifrån filmer och foton. Mestadels i Sverige, Berlin, Mexico.
Uppväxt i Köpenhamn, Canada och USA.
Har utbildats i film i Mexico City och varit verksam där i 11 år. Har varit bosatt och verksam i Berlin, New York, Paris.
Har tidigare varit filmklippare och dramaturg och undervisat många år i film.
Tidigare verksam i textil, design och mode.

JOHAN MOIR
Johan Moir är en kontrabasist, improvisatör och kompositör numera bosatt i Stockholm. I sitt musicerande utforskar Johan de akustiska möjligheterna med kontrabasen genom att använda sig av utökade tekniker, preparationer och Just Intonation, för att skapa ett flöde av övertoner som bildar intressanta ljudlandskap.
Johan har tidigare varit bosatt och aktiv på både den Göteborgska, Berlinska och Australienska scenen och har turnerat runtomkring i Europa samt även Australien, Mexiko, USA och Taiwan samt samarbetat med musiker såsom: Burkhard Beins (DE), Axel Dörner(DE) Emilio Gordoa (MX/DE), Tristan Honsinger (US/DE), Paal-Nilssen Love(NO), Andrea Parkins (US/DE), Rieko Okuda (JP/DE), Mia Dyberg (DK/DE), Julia Reidy (AUS/DE) och Franz Hautzinger (AUT).
Han har släppt ett flertal skivor, bl.a ”Ignition” m. Ignite (2018), samt ”Hollow Wood” m. Guilherme Rodrigues.

RASMUS PERSSON
Rasmus person är en ljud- och ljuskonstnär samt tekniker baserad i Göteborg. Genom att arbeta genom både konst och teknik, skapar han atmosfärer och situationer genom ljus, ljud, rum, rörelse och visuella språk. Tidigare arbeten inkluderar flertalet teaterföreställningar, installationer och konserter som en del av bland annat Skogen, Teater Galeasen, Atalante, Ställbergs Gruva, Gruppen, samt egna konstnärliga projekt.
